CRICKET: A 91-run partnership between Metropolitan-Easts’ co-captain Peter Reimers and Ross Milton secured a win over Highfields Railways at the weekend.

Met-Easts went into bat first and racked up a total of 196.

“Our partnership helped a great deal,” Reimers said.

Highfields started their innings strong and were soon none for about 60.

Then young guns Harry Weir and Sebastion Ingold stepped up to bowl for Met-Easts.

“They were excellent for us and kept it really right,” Reimers said.

“It was really good to see them step up and bowl really well.”

Highfields showed more confidence at the crease towards the end of their innings.

“They started to throw the bat late and got a few runs,” Reimers said.

Then Met-Easts got a run out and Reimers took three late wickets to bowl Highfields out in the second last over.

Reimers said Highfields battled hard to catch up like that.

“They are quite a young team. They’re changing with us after losing a few older players,” he said.

“Dan Anderson bowled with some good heat as an opener.

“He’s an Australian junior player and he came back and bowled really well.”

It was a good sign for the future having quality young players in both sides, Reimers said.

“We have some good young kids coming through who have been playing in the lower grades,” he said.

“Now they have the opportunity to step up and they have really well.”

Reimers believed blooding new players would only strengthen Toowoomba cricket.

“It’s not as strong as it used to be,” he said.

“But with others coming back hopefully these young kids can do a good job for us and keep Toowoomba cricket going.”

Another new-look team this season is defending premiers Wests.

Wests also had some good results at the weekend with its A grade, reserves and B grade sides all posting wins.

Alex Flett took four wickets in his A grade debut while Michael Byrnes also put on a show and David Solomon, another young player, took three in the D grade game.

Met-Easts have now won two from two in the Harding-Madsen Shield while Northern Brothers Diggers dropped their first game to Central Districts.
