Rangers fall short

BASEBALL: Rangers are still searching for their first win of the GBL Division One after another frustrating weekend.

Once again an inability to build pressure on opposition batters and errors proved costly in the Toowoomba side’s double header against the visiting Wests Bulldogs.

“Key errors at crucial moments are costing us big time,” Rangers coach Tony Tarca said.

“We have a lot of young guys out there who haven’t played at this level before and it’s a real learning curve for them.

“It’s a nine man game and they’re seeing what happens when we make a mistake they’re punished.”

Saturday night’s match at Commonwealth Oval looked to be Rangers’ best shot at opening their account for the season.

Trailing 6-1 early in the clash Rangers fought back before losing 14-9.

“They scored too many runs when they were two out,” Tarca said.

“We need to finish those innings but we haven’t been able to build consistent pressure.

“Our pitchers aren’t working ahead of the batters and when they (batters) are in front they know a strike is coming up and they’re scoring the runs.

Speaking after Sunday’s 10-0 defeat club president Darryl Luchterhand’s hope for the side is simple.

“It’s going to be a tough season for the team. We don’t have a lot of guys out there who have played at the majors level,” he said.

“At the end of season if we can show we’re competitive I’ll be happy. We’re hoping to get a few players in to strengthen the side but as long as we’re out there competing it’ll be good.”
