Pride of Lions kicks goals for our juniors

Brisbane Lions star Sabrina Frederick-Traub is looking forward to returning to Toowoomba this week to host a high performance clinic.

Frederick-Traub ran the female diversity trials in the Darling Downs earlier this year and said the talent she saw then was “actually amazing”.

“We managed to get three from the region in the All Australian team which was a pretty good result,” she said.

On Thursday she will be on the hunt for future Brisbane Lions players.

“We’re not expecting people to be complete super stars the whole point is to come and learn,” she said.

In the session Frederick-Traub will give juniors an insight into what it’s like to be a professional AFLW player which she said can be a bit of a juggling act.

“It’s pretty crazy but definitely a dream come true,” she said.

The UK-born Lions player moved to Perth when she was seven years old.

She first picked up a sherrin during lunch time at school.

“I just gave it a go because it was there, I’m glad I actually did try it, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Her advice to aspiring athletes is give it a try.

“You never know if you’re going to love it,” she said.

“And for the girls already playing you can never have a ball in your hand for too long, there is a massive pathway in front of you.”

The Brisbane ruck and centre half-forward is getting ready to start pre-season training in two weeks with the Lions.

Frederick-Traub is the second Lions player to visit the region recently after All Australian Sam Virgo was here last month helping the U17 Darling Downs Demons girls prepare for the State Championships.

The high performance clinic is open to juniors under 18 years and will be at Concordia Lutheran College on Thursday from 4pm.
