Ghost tales make us paranormal hot spot

TOOWOOMBA is known as the paranormal capital of Australia.

There have been a number of mysterious ghost sightings and eerie unexplaine­d experience­s around the region.

Paranormal and historical enthusiast Katie Harvey investigat­es ghostly happenings in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.

She has also hosted a number of tours of the region’s most haunted hang-outs.

Ms Harvey has come up with a list of the most haunted places in Toowoomba.

De Molay House

De Molay House is opposite Queens Park and the site was once a reformator­y for girls. It is thought to be haunted by a girl who committed suicide.

Railway station

It is thought that the Toowoomba Railway Station is haunted by the ghost of a woman who was killed in the early 1930s.

She is often seen looking out of a second-floor window at the station.

Oakdene House

A ghost wearing a brown suit has been seen inside Oakdene House near TAFE Queensland South West.

The Strand

There are rumours cinema two is haunted by a woman who died in 1917 after she became sick. Some say she died there when it was a hotel and others say she died at hospital.

Ascot House

Maggie Hume haunts Ascot House on Newmarket St in Newtown. It is thought she died from taking strychnine poison.

Baillie Henderson

There are rumours Baillie Henderson and down the road at 70 Hogg St are haunted by someone who died after leaving the hospital.

Gowrie House

The hostel on the corner of Mary and Arthur Sts is said to be haunted by a lady in a long, grey dress.

Vacy Hall

Past guests of Vacy Hall have reported a number of different ghost sightings, including a teenage boy and woman wearing old-fashioned clothing.

Downlands College

A man on fire has been seen running through the school grounds. People say the administra­tion building is haunted by a woman and the chapel is haunted by a priest.

Toowoomba Repertory Theatre

A young girl haunts the Toowoomba Repertory Theatre. She is believed to have hanged herself while she was imprisoned in the local reformator­y.

Actors walking to the dressing rooms are warned to “watch the third step” and people have had invisible hands clasp their ankles.

Royal Bull’s Head Inn

There have been several sightings of ghosts in the pub, including two farmers who died of arsenic poisoning in the 1800s.

Many night tours are held at the site, with people feeling uneasy inside the house.
