WHAT THE LNP HAS PROMISED GLENVALE

GLENVALE State School parents who wait up to half an hour in traffic to drop their children off have been promised a new $500,000 car park from the LNP.

Toowoomba South MP David Janetzki said the funding promise, which was his biggest of the election campaign so far, would ease the congestion caused by 2200 vehicles that drive past the school on Glenvale Rd every day.

THERE are days when it’s quicker for Melissa Greensill to walk her two children 3km to Glenvale State School than it is to drop them off.

She is one of hundreds of parents in Glenvale who could benefit from a $500,000 car park the LNP has promised as part of its 2017 election campaign.

Mrs Greensill has worked with Toowoomba South MP David Janetzki for several years on a solution to the school’s traffic woes, which grow worse as Glenvale expands.

More than 2200 vehicles drive past Glenvale State School every day, 10 per cent of which are heavy vehicles.

Mr Janetzki said with the school’s population doubling in nearly two decades, the lack of parking and single entrance into the school turned drop-off and pick-up periods into gridlock.

“The plan will be that it goes at the eastern end of the oval, and the trick is to get some of that traffic off Glenvale Rd and into the new drop-off/pick-up zone,” he said.

“The one thing that distinguishes Glenvale State School is that there is only point to get in and out of the school, on an extremely busy road that leads to the showgrounds and extraordinary developments around here, including another 140 lots being built.

“The school has doubled in size since 2000 – it’s at 800 students now.”

Mrs Greensill said one of her major concerns presently was student safety along the road, adding she had seen plenty of near-misses.

“That was my biggest fear – that something tragic would happen before something was done about it,” she said.
