FRIENDLY rivalry will combine with fierce competition as local police and defence force members go head-to-head to support a cause close to their hearts.

In what will be a lead-up game at Gatton’s Legends of League event, the police and Australian Defence Force will compete in a game of rugby league today.

The two groups have gone up against in each other before, but this year will have added significance playing for the inaugural Brett Forte Cup.

Leading Seaman Will Scott said he had a huge response from people wanting to be involved.

“A couple of months ago I contacted the police and I asked them ‘would it be ok if we start this game up’, if we can use Brett’s name in a cup to honour his memory,” he said.

“It is a big deal for both the police but us as well. We want to put on a really good game and make it big so this continues for many years to come.”

Police team coach Sergeant Greg Wheeler said there would be a ceremony before the game, with the trophy presented to captains by Inspector Sharee Cumming.

Senior Constable Forte’s wife Suzie and children will attend the game at Cahill Park, near where Snr Const Forte was killed in May.

“I can say that certainly while the quality of the game may not be NRL standard, the competitiveness makes up for it,” Sgt Wheeler said.
