Rookie takes in sounds of Slater

-

RUGBY LEAGUE: Hoping to be Australia’s No.1 heir apparent, Tom Trbojevic is lapping up being involved in camp with the incumbent Billy Slater.

In fact, he’s getting an earful while taking notes during this Rugby League World Cup.

The Manly Sea Eagles star made his Kangaroos debut in last weekend’s win over France at right wing, and will step out against Lebanon on Saturday at Allianz Stadium in the centres.

But the 21-year-old’s goal is to ultimately claim the fullback position from the great Slater.

While he’s finding his feet at international level, he will also need to find his voice.

Trbojevic has known for a long time what Slater can do on the field with his actions.

“He’s been so good for so long and he probably is the best fullback to ever play the game,” he said.

But training alongside the Storm superstar, he realises just how vocal he is.

“The way he talks at training, on the field. You never hear him shut up. He’s that loud,” he said.

“Honestly, if you go down there and listen to him, he’s so good at telling people what he wants and you need that from your good fullbacks.”

Slater will be rested this weekend, with Valentine Holmes given his shot at fullback. One of Holmes, Trbojevic and James Tedesco, who is representing Italy, will eventually get Kangaroos honours at No.1.

Right now, Trbojevic is just happy to be out there.

“(Coach Mal Meninga) said that versatility is a big thing for him and I’m just happy to play where he wants me,” he said.

Trbojevic was quick to dismiss any chance he could become a “big head”.

“I wouldn’t say I enjoy it (the limelight) but I understand it is part of the game,” Trbojevic said.

“I have been brought up to know I can’t have a big head. I want to thank my parents (John and Melissa) for that.

“I know to never to get too far ahead of myself.”
