Pan Pacific gold
Young athlete bags big haul of medals
BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU: You would be hard pressed to find a jiu jitsu champion more laid back than Kahn Asgill.
The Toowoomba teen recently returned from the Pan Pacific Jiu Jitsu Championships with four medals (gold, two silver and bronze), the sixth year in a row he has won gold at the
titles, but his reaction was a little subdued.
“I’m happy with how I went but I would’ve liked to done a little better,” Asgill said.
“It is what it is though you just want to win all the time.”
He may have wanted a little more but there is no
mistaking Asgill’s passion and dedication to his sport.
Asgill trains several times a week at Joe Perry’s Ka-Chi Mixed Martial Arts gym in an effort to constantly refine and improve his skills.
He then focuses on those skills and the things he has learnt when competing with one key difference, smiles, a
lot.
“When I’m competing I just try to remember my training, focus on my strengths and smile,” Asgill said.
“It helps me stay calm and focused, you can’t be too aggressive in jiu jitsu.
“You can’t sit back too much but if you’re too aggressive against someone they can counter you and win the match quickly.”
Kate Asgill said her son’s calm outward demeanour disguises his true intentions.
“He’s not an aggressive kid, he’s always smiling even in the middle of a fight, but he’s still very assertive,” she said.
“If he sees an opportunity he will do his best advantage of it.”
