Rep play will tickle audiences’ fancy

-

A SAUCY French comedy that has been adapted to English to the acclaim of international audiences is set to delight Toowoomba audiences with its witty humour at Repertory Theatre this month.

The comedic farce Don’t Dress for Dinner by French playwright Marc Camoletti will run at Toowoomba Repertory Theatre,

94 Margaret St, from November 8–25.

Director Mark Phythian said the play was originally performed in Paris under the title Pyjamas Pour Six before being adapted to English and first performed in the West End, London, in 1991 and on Broadway, US, where it won two Tony Awards.

“I had previously directed another comedy by Marc Camoletti (Boeing Boeing) and thought Don’t Dress for Dinner was equally as funny,” Mr Phythian said.

“Don’t Dress for Dinner is a very funny farce based on the relatively simple premise of a secret tete-a-tete going wrong, quickly escalating into a complex web of lies and mistaken identities.

“The script is full of fast-paced witty dialogue, which relies on all the actors working together as a tight ensemble maintaining the various ‘relationships’ between the characters.”

The play’s synopsis is that Bernard is planning a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in his charming French farmhouse, while his wife, Jacqueline, is away.

He has even arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights and has invited his best friend, Robert, along to provide the alibi, not knowing that Robert and Jacqueline are having an affair.

Suppose the cook has to pretend to be the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook.

Cast members are Adrian Smith, Fiona Quinn, Mark Scholefield, Cat Ardi Brennan, Beth Coeghegan and David Parker.

Online ticketing is open at www.toowoombarepertorytheatre.com.au, which also provides contact details for fundraising performances.

The theatre’s box office, opposite Queens Park, opens Friday, November 10, and will be open fom 11am–3pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until tickets are sold out.
