THE Chronicle Garden Competition and the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers have been recognised for their fantastic promotion of horticulture.

Combined, the events were awarded the inaugural 2017 Rural Greenspace Award by the Australian Institute of Horticulture.

The Australian Institute of Horticulture celebrated its 57th annual awards at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Sydney on Saturday, October 28.

Yesterday the award was handed over to The Chronicle and the Toowoomba Regional Council.

Every year the institute seeks out and awards those who have led, inspired, educated and promoted horticulture in all its forms.

The Chronicle’s regional finance manager Patrick Wilson said the award wouldn’t be possible without Toowoomba’s dedicated green thumbs.

“The award is a nod not only to The Chronicle and the Toowoomba Regional Council but to all the community gardeners who put so much hard work into making their gardens look spectacular,” he said.

Toowoomba Regional Council tourism and events portfolio leader councillor Geoff McDonald said to get recognised at a national level was always significant.

“To make this award even more special is the fact it is the inaugural. It also means more promotion which will turn into more visitors at carnival next year,” he said.
