Carols a sight to behold

THERE’S always one sight at Christmas that never fails to dazzle Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio.
And that’s at the Triple M Mayoral Carols by Candlelight event, when it’s starting to get dark and the thousands of residents are waving their brightly lit candles in the air.
“When you go to Queens Park and see the candles waving and you hear the music, it’s a very special time for Toowoomba,” he said.
“Christmas is a very special time of year, no matter what anyone’s beliefs are.
“It’s a time to get together and it’s a time for family.”
Cr Antonio’s comments yesterday came at the launch of this year’s Triple M Mayoral Candles by Candlelight, to be held at Queens Park on Sunday, December 3.
The event will be hosted by Triple M Darling Downs breakfast announcer Lee Faulkner and Channel 9 Darling Downs news presenter and former
Toowoomba woman Samantha Heathwood.
Event organiser Dave Schenk, who has been involved with the carols for the last 12 years, said they would welcome a host of loved Toowoomba entertainers to the stage to celebrate Christmas.
“I love the fact that we’ve never brought in out of town headliners,” he said.
He said Cool Nights Big Band, Brendon Walmsley and the Beamish Boys would be performing on the night, along with the lucky winner of the Triple M Star Search.
The winner of the
competition will be chosen next weekend during an event at Grand Central Shopping Centre and will perform on stage during the carols event.
Cr Antonio also announced that proceeds of the event would be directed towards young people in the community who needed a hand up.
He said previous events
had raised $5000 and he hoped to exceed that target.
