Prepare yourself for a flood

Ensure you’re equipped with the right tools and information in case a flood hits your region

-

FLOODING can have a catastrophic impact on a region and leave heartache in its wake, which is why being prepared is vital.

Here are some tips from the State Emergency Service on how to prepare for a flood this storm season.

1. KNOW YOUR RISK

Find out about the local flood history. Know previous flood heights and when it may affect your property.

Your local council should be able to help with more information. Be aware of the natural signs of flooding and know how you may be warned of possible flooding.

2. KNOW WHERE TO GO

Find the safest evacuation route and know the height at which your evacuation route may be cut off.

Find out where any evacuation centres could be set up in your area and check with friends and relatives outside the flood-prone area to organise a place to go to.

3. KNOW WHO TO CALL

For emergency help in floods and storms, phone the SES on 132 500.

Keep local emergency numbers handy (near your phone, in your mobile and on your fridge). In a life-threatening emergency, phone 000.

4. KNOW YOUR PLAN

Discuss with your family exactly what will happen in the event of a flood. When will you leave, what you will take, where you will go, etc.

5. GET YOUR KIT TOGETHER

Put together an emergency kit for your home or business with all essentials.

6. PREPARE NOW TO ACT EARLY

Know the triggers, warnings and natural signs of flooding so that you can act quickly. Practice your plan and share it with neighbours.

7. CHECK YOUR INSURANCE

Make sure your insurance is suitable to your situation and risk and it is current.

8. STAY UPDATED

Read your local newspaper, website and listen to local radio for information, updates and advice.

Keep this guide to refer to in an emergency.
