Cop hit accused remains in jail

-

A 24-YEAR-OLD man accused of a coward’s punch on a policeman at a Toowoomba crash scene then assaulting two tow-truck drivers has been remanded in custody.

Trevor William Cordwell was not brought into Toowoomba Magistrates Court when his case was mentioned with his solicitor Brad Skuse telling the court his client’s parole had been suspended and so he would remain in custody.

That being the case, there would be no bail application at this time, Mr Skuse said.

Cordwell is accused of coming upon the scene of a two-car crash at the corner of Greenwattle and Souths Sts late Friday night where a policeman was taking down details.

Police claim the 24-year-old had approached and punched the policeman to the head before grappling with two tow-truck drivers who had come to the aid of the officer who was later treated at hospital for relatively minor injuries.

Cordwell has not been required to enter any pleas to charges of serious assault of police and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

He had since been held in the Toowoomba watch house until his parole status was ascertained but he would now be transferred to a remand centre.

He was remanded in custody with his matters adjourned for mention back in the same court next month.
