Horn session primes Katsidis for title shot

Toowoomba’s former two-time world champion Michael Katsidis has upped the ante for his Super8 title crusade at Rumours International this weekend with some help from an unexpected quarter.

Katsidis this week wound back the clock to his elite-level fighting days in a searching workout with Brisbane’s WBO world welterweight champion Jeff Horn.

The “clash” of the champions was part of Horn’s rigorous preparation for his December 13 title defence against England’s Gary Corcoran in what is being billed as the “Battle of Brisbane”.

But in what shapes as an ominous piece of timing for Katsidis, his three-round exchange with Horn comes of the eve of his Super8 title bid on home soil this Saturday night.

The inaugural Super8 brings together eight fighters in an elimination tournament with the winner of each of their three-round bouts advancing to the final offering $20,000 to the winner.

The event has drawn a variety of champions, former champions and rising stars who will find themselves in frantic three-round contests.

The Super8 draw to decide each boxer’s first-round opponent will be made during today’s official TGW & Smith Brings The Big Fights 18 press conference from 1pm at Potters Boutique Hotel.

The draw will be broadcast live on Facebook.

The Super8 title field is Jack Asis, Jamie Hilt, Michael Katsidis, Mick Shaw, Ya Jie Ding, Luke Woods, Robert Toomey and Jason Kanofski.

TICKETS for the card are on sale at Smithy’s Gym.
