Soccer identity applauds coach’s decision

Ange Postecoglou’s decision to quit his role as Socceroos coach shocked the Australian soccer community yesterday.

Leading up to Australia’s World Cup qualifier with Honduras media speculation focused heavily on Postecoglou’s uncertain future after cryptic comments from the coach.

His decision divided the Australian soccer community with many questioning its timing. However Football Queensland South West chairman Nigel Fanning is one of those praising Postecoglou’s decision.

Fanning believes Postegoclou’s decision to stand down is a testament to his character.

“It is an unprecedented considering his Asian Cup success and qualifying for the World Cup,” Fanning said.

“But it shows he will not be intimidated or bullied by elements of the media or members of Australia’s greater football family.

“He’s shown a real strength of character by standing up for his beliefs.”

Fanning believes Postegoclou’s decision can be partly attributed to a systemic failing of the Australian sporting psyche.

“We get right behind our winners but we also turn very quickly on losers,” he said.

“That attitude needs to change from the top down.”

Moving forward Fanning believes Football Federation has two options.

“Option A is they sign a high profile international manager for the short term, a Guus Hiddink type, someone who will galvanise the squad and the nation,” he said.

“Option B is they sign a long-term replacement. Either option would be successful provided they secure the right person.

“I think Graham Arnold (current Sydney FC coach and former Socceroos assistant coach) would be an ideal candidate in either role.

“He has the experience and he plays an attractive style of football.”
