BreastScreen for Highfields ladies
WOMEN in Highfields will again have access to a breast screen service after a local shopping centre decided to not allow the BreastScreen bus a parking space.
Earlier this month The Chronicle revealed the bus that visited Highfields each December, and parked in the front parking bays of the Highfields Village Shopping Centre, was advised not to by shopping centre management.
A Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said they were told the December period leading up to Christmas was a busy time and BreastScreen was advised they would be unable to use the usual space for screening.
But the health service is now encouraging Highfields women to take advantage of a new shuttle bus service.
The free bus service will operate between Highfields and the BreastScreen Queensland Toowoomba service at 661 Ruthven St.
However after residents raised their concerns in The Chronicle, shopping centre management and BreastScreen Queensland negotiated the bus would return in 2018 at the usual location.
Health promotion officer Alexandra Robbins-Hill said the introduction of the shuttle bus was aimed at encouraging more women aged 40 years and over to have regular breast screens.
