THE 120-YEAR-OLD “Marivare” at 87 Taylor Street, Newtown, has sold under the hammer.

The historic 1897 home sold at auction at Fitzy’s on Tuesday night for $645,000 before a packed room.

Designed by renowned Queensland architect William Hodgen Jnr, the residence had been lovingly restored while retaining the form and details of the original build, including the bay windows, pressed metal ceilings and polished timber floors.

William Hodgen Jnr was an architect who designed and renovated many of Toowoomba’s iconic buildings and homes.

According to historians John Parker and Sandra Searston in their book Altering the Face of Toowoomba, “Marivare” was originally built for newly married couple, dentist James Stanley Nolan and his wife Kathleen Margaret Nolan (nee Gilder), with architectural drawings completed in April 1897.

Ray White Toowoomba real estate agent Wade Lockrey said the property had received more than 90 inspections over the four-week campaign, with four registered bidders on the night.

“Bidding opened at $500,000 and slowed down around $630,000. We then got an agreement from the buyer to put it on the market and sold it under the hammer for $645,000,” Mr Lockrey said.

The property was one of four to sell on the night.

A triplex at 2 Rachel Street, Darling Heights, sold for $501,000 under the hammer. A property at 23 South Street, Rangeville, sold prior to auction for $675,000. A third property, Bon Accord, on Oestrich Road, Wellcamp, sold under the hammer for an undisclosed price.

“The results, for me, reflect an increase in buyer confidence in the market,” Mr Lockrey said.
