COURTNEY McCarthy grew up in Oakey and when it came time for her to find a full-time job she decided to move to Toowoomba, to better her chances of securing employment.

She hoped by moving to a bigger town, it would provide more job opportunities.

industry but after awhile her shifts were cut back to only two hours a week.

Her workplace ended up letting her go because there wasn’t enough work and Ms McCarthy became unemployed once again.

In the past month she applied for up to 60 jobs without any luck.

She said it was daunting being one of the thousands of youth unemployed, all competing for the same positions.

“I didn’t have any luck while I was a school student in Oakey and I thought I’d have more luck in Toowoomba,” she said.

“But it’s almost just as bad. I have so many qualifications in the

hospitality industry but no one will give me a chance.”

Ms McCarthy has her RSA, RSG, basic barista skills and a certificate one, two and three in hospitality.

“I’ve applied for anything and everything - mainly in hospitality and retail,” she said.

“It is really difficult being unemployed and having to live off Centrelink when all I want to do is work.”

Ms McCarthy relies on public transport to get into the CBD and said the bus system could do with improvements, such as running before 8am for those who need to start work early.
