Teams in fight for a grand final spot

-

BASKETBALL: The women’s game will be the highlight of the Heathley Big Q League this weekend.

USQ Dragons will play the leading Harristown Runnin’ Rebels for a golden ticket to the grand final.

This weekend is the last round before play-offs and with just three teams in the women’s competition, the winner will go straight through to the grand final.

“The Rebel women have a good chance of winning this,” Harristown coach Pop Dickerson said.

“USQ are the team to beat. They go a little deeper than we do, but we have picked up a couple of really good girls during the course of the season.”

Harristown’s Despena Dickerson is the leading women’s point scorer with 106.

Dickerson said Mountaineers teammate Chelsea Orbell also had a really good game in Warwick the last time they played there.

“She is almost unstoppable,” he said.

“Hopefully this will help them towards the QBL season.”

Next year Dickerson

hoped to double the number of teams playing in the women’s competition.

He said the men’s Rebels teams were looking forward to travelling to Stanthorpe to take on the Granite Belt Giants.

“We’re pretty big in size. We just have to score a few more points and execute a little bit better,” Dickerson said.

Teams will have a week off before semi-finals start on December 8.
