How switching telcos saved me $1152 a year

- SOPHIE ELSWORTH

ABOUT half an hour’s work will save me a neat $1152 a year.

Yes, you have read correctly ... if only switching financial service providers was as easy as jumping telcos.

My 24-month mobile iPhone 6 plan was costing me a massive $130 a month so when my contract expired this month I couldn’t have pounced more quickly to save myself some serious cash.

The solution – about 15 minutes online research combined with asking a telco guru for some suggestions, a call to my new provider to ask a few questions, online sign-up and bang, my hard work was done.

I’ve always been loyal to two of the nation’s biggest telcos but I thought it was time to branch out and find myself a more competitive deal.

The new iPhone X didn’t catch my attention so already I was going to save by not having to upgrade to the fanciest new handset.

I jumped on to telco comparison website Whistleout.com.au and found loads of information about phone providers I’d never even heard of – all I was chasing was 10GB of data a month and unlimited calls and texts.

And bingo, Moose Mobile popped up as the answer for me.

It’s a Brisbanebased provider which I have learned has thousands of customers signing up each month since it rolled out about a year ago.

At $36 a month, already my bills are going to be slashed by nearly $100 a month and the greatest thing about switching telcos is you can still keep your same number thanks to mobile phone number portability.

On boasting to a friend about my giant savings, she laughed at my new carrier’s name, Moose Mobile, mocking me and asked “who on earth are they?”

OK, fair question.

Well, my friend they are one of the many smaller telcos giving the big guys – Telstra, Optus and Vodafone a run for their money.

Most of you probably don’t know Australia only has three mobile phone networks, so regardless of who your telco company is, in some shape or form your phone will be on the either the Telstra, Optus or Vodafone network.

Based on this you can then choose which network is better for you.

Once I decided to sign up to Moose, I just punched in my details online and within three days I had my new SIM in the post.

A follow up text by Moose’s Marco and I was in business – he’s locked in a time to allow for my switch across to my new carrier.

This was so easy to do, shortly after the scheduled time my previous carrier was disconnected, I inserted my new SIM and bang I was now a Moose customer.

That’s it. No messy paperwork, no need to tell my old carrier, my contract had ended, my new month-bymonth deal had begun and now I’m on track to save myself over $1100 in the next 12 months.

If only more people would do the same, it’s that simple.
