University are ready to put the one-day games behind them and focus on the two-day and Twenty20 formats.

Despite only winning two games this season in the Harding-Madsen Shield, University opening bowler Darcy Murphy said it could be a positive sign of what was to come.

“Last season we had a pretty shaky start too and then made the finals,” he said.

“It’s nothing really to worry about as long as we stick to our guns and keep on striving.”

University lost the Twenty20 grand final to Wests last year and were knocked out in the two-day finals.

“Two-day is the pinnacle of cricket in Toowoomba. Our goal is to make the grand final for that next year,” Murphy said.

As for the one-day format, Murphy said it looked like University were out of the finals chase.

“But we would still like to finish on a good note next week with a win against Central Districts,” he said.

This year University found it difficult to capitalise with the bat.

“For the competition as a whole our bowling and fielding was right up there with the better teams,” Murphy said.

“The energy is good, the culture is good and the intensity seems to be there, we just haven’t scored enough runs.”

The young team has some promising hitters coming through the ranks like James Bidgood and Tully Wilson.

“They’re young batters and they were impressive in their first season of A-grade,” Murphy said. “I think we’re a pretty young team and there are still a lot of positives to take away.

“We’ll come back better and stronger after Christmas.”

This weekend is the final round of the one-day format.
