Readers get fired up over Hottest 100 date change

THE news that Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown will no longer be held on Australia Day did not go down well with many Toowoomba residents.

On Monday, the radio station announced it made the decision after the results of an online survey.

The Hottest 100 will now be held on Saturday,

January 27 and the Hottest 200 on Sunday, January 28.

The decision follows a push to change the date of Australia Day, which marks the arrival of the First Fleet

and has also been referred to as “Invasion Day” by indigenous Australians.

The Chronicle shared the news with its online readers and many people were unhappy with the change in date.

Justin Matthew said: “Sorry, I won’t be tuning in any more if the national broadcaster is seeking to make political points and create even more division in the community.”

David Thrift said: “Sounds like satisfying the do-gooders again. Has always been on Australia Day and is very much part of the tradition for many.”

Leonie Beacon said: “This has to be a joke. We can still honour Australia Day while listening to good music.”

There were a few people who said they didn’t mind the change in date.

Mel Campbell loves listening to the countdown on Australia Day but said the change was fine.

“Australia Day should be about all the great things about our country, not just great music,” she said.
