Be proud to take a firm stand

IT IS encouraging to see the next generation taking an early stand against violence in all its forms.

By standing up and making a pledge to never be silent in terms of domestic and family violence, there is hope the perpetuating cycle can one day be broken.

But it’s far from a token gesture and the programs such as that which Newtown State School has completed over the past year suggests the very basic fundamentals are being taught, embraced and practised every day.

Newtown students formed their own oath based on being respectful, responsible and safe - to themselves, their peers, families and the wider community.

It means that this next generation of young people will be influenced by what they have learnt inside the school gates and, it’s hoped, take that to their own individual communities - be that sports clubs, the family unit, or just their wider social circles.

The annual White Ribbon Day breakfast at Clewley Park last week also included a strong showing of students from a number of schools, including Harristown State High School.

Surrounded by community, civic, police and business leaders, these students took the pledge to never be silent about domestic and family violence.

It’s very encouraging.
