More information about the NDIS
THE National Disability Insurance Scheme (also called the NDIS) is the new way of providing disability support.
The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to enjoy an ordinary life.
The NDIS also provides people with disability, their family and carers with information and referrals to existing support services in the community.
By 2019, the NDIS will support about 460,000 Australians with disability.
To become an NDIS participant a person must:
Have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to take part in everyday activities
Be aged less than 65 when they first enter the NDIS
Be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a Protected Special Category visa, and
Live in an area where the NDIS is available
Carers Queensland is excited to be partnering with the NDIS to provide Local Area Coordinator (LAC) support in Ipswich and Toowoomba.
As a NDIS LAC Partner, Carers Queensland will reach out to people with disability, get to know specific needs, what’s important to them and ensure the right services are in place to support the life they want.
Services will be tailored to help to meet individual goals, whether that is becoming more involved in the community through volunteering, sports clubs or local theatre, living more independently or improving individual wellbeing.
How will NDIS LAC support people with disability?
As the LAC, Carers Queensland will:
Meet with people with disability and their family and carers to talk about current support networks
Understand what people wish to achieve and develop a plan and set goals to help achieve the plan
Help find and access the best support services to meet individual needs
Assist in managing any issues with getting services and support
Link people to information and support in the community so that they are included and involved.
Carers Queensland will help people with disability get started with the NDIS and ensure the support is meeting their needs.
