A QUIET COMMUNITY HUB
The Downs Hotel is regarded as one of Toowoomba’s best suburban country pubs and new owner Stfan Horne has grand plans for the “old girl” — as he lovingly refers to her.
And she does have a few years under her belt.
Steeped in history, it is believed that The Downs Hotel is one of the original pubs on the Darling Downs — starting operations in 1858.
And it’s that rich history that appeals to the new owner and the pub’s regulars.
That’s why Stfan says he is deliberately taking it slow.
“I’ve only been here three months and I want to take my time and get to know the customers and my staff and get their input and ideas on the hotel and the directions we should take,” he said.
The hotel had undergone renovations six or seven years ago and Stfan likens it to grandpa’s old axe – you’re not sure what’s original and what isn’t.
“But she’s a lovely old girl and we want to make sure she becomes a safe and comfortable community hub. A family friendly venue that you can relax in after a hard day’s work and have a quiet beer.
“No loud music. No flashing lights. Just relax.
“I think we’re doing a great job already, but we’re looking at our service levels right throughout the hotel — bars, gaming, meals and where we can improve for our customers.”
“I don’t always have the right answers and that’s why I am relying on the good people I have working with me.
“I have amazing staff and they are doing a marvellous job and I know our customers will appreciate that commitment to making our pub a place to truly unwind and enjoy.”
