Project transforms school
Grammar gym to open 2018
PROGRESS on the Toowoomba Grammar School’s multi-million dollar gymnasium is forging ahead.
The $14 million structure towers above the school’s neighbouring aquatic centre and original gymnasium, visible from Herries and Mackenzie Sts, cementing it as an elite sporting facility.
Toowoomba Grammar School headmaster Peter Hauser said the gymnasium featured three courts and towered about six-storeys high.
“It is work in progress but it will be an absolutely stunning building,” Mr Hauser said.
“We need something like this. It’s a boys school, boys love their sport. We want them to be physically fit and active.”
Mr Hauser said there would be an array of sports on offer at the gymnasium, including basketball, volleyball, indoor cricket and futsal as well as badminton and table tennis.
It will also feature cardio and strength and conditioning equipment, two classrooms, function area, bathrooms, changing facilities and seating for about 1000 people.
The building is part of a bigger 10-year plan and has been in progress since January this year, with its expected opening in February.
Mr Hauser added people had a misconception the building had taken out an original school oval but this was incorrect.
“But to the contrary we have actually increased the use of an additional oval, creating a grandstand area,” he said.
