Staying fit, having fun

-

Ken Hutton:

I’VE been in Toowoomba for 20 years. I’m a retired grazier from near Guyra.

I moved to Toowoomba because of family.

I walk every Tuesday and Thursdays if possible.

I enjoy the social part and the exercises and, yeah, we’re keeping fit while we’re doing it ... and it doesn’t hurt that much when you’re in company.

What do I like about Toowoomba? It’s got everything I require. It’s got cultural things and a good health setup and all the amenities that I need as a retired person.

Barry Herrmann:

I’ve been in Toowoomba for 31 years, and was originally from South Australia.

These days I’m a retired postal worker and I enjoy walking, and I’ve been involved in Toowoomba Regional Council’s CHANGE project for quite a lot of years, and I lead this particular group (Toowoomba Central Walkers).

The CHANGE project is an exercise project Toowoomba Regional Council have set up across Toowoomba and the region.

It’s a cheap way of getting people to exercise in various parks. We also walk under the Heart Foundation banner as well.

The reason I got involved was I was doing exercises at St Andrew’s Hospital under the cardiovascular program there, after having a pulmonary embolism. They suggested exercising, and I needed exercising because I was very unfit and, yeah, I’ve been pretty well walking ever since to keep fit.

What do I like about Toowoomba? It’s got everything here – cultural activities, parks, plenty of footpaths. I don’t like bike-riding around the place because cars try to kill you.

Marilyn Johnson:

I’ve been here about 40 years and I’m retired.

How’d I find out about Toowoomba Central Walkers? I saw it advertised at Grand Central. I’ve been here doing this for about 20 years. More than 20, perhaps.

It had been going for about 12 months when I joined. I do enjoy it. It’s social, yeah. I like it because you get to meet different friends.

What do I like about Toowoomba? It’s central to everything where I go and it’s got all the essentials that you need. And the parks, I do like the parks.

Jennifer Murray:

I’ve been in Toowoomba for many years. I came up here with my family. It’s a beautiful place to bring a family up. It really is.

What do I like about the walking group? The exercise is just so important for us all.

Yeah. I’ve been with this group for many years – over 25 years I’m sure.

I enjoy the social aspect of it, the friendship, the early morning walks with so many different people, it’s just invigorating.

What do I like about Toowoomba?

Just the easy life of it. I grew up in Brisbane and I certainly wouldn’t go back again.

The weather is good, and yes, it has everything I need, and it’s definitely got easy access to quite a number of places.
