New recruits hard at work on and off field

Paul Reedy could not be happier with what he’s seeing at the Western Mustangs.

The Mustangs chairman said the players had been hard at work in pre-season for about a month and the energy around the club was fantastic.

“Pre-season started at the beginning of November and the boys will train right through to the week before Christmas,” Reedy said.

“The energy has been fantastic.

“We have about 100 players training at Gold Park every Tuesday and Thursday plus our training cells at Kingaroy, Roma and Warwick.

“You can see the enthusiasm in every session. Everyone is working hard.”

Reedy said the days of players running until they dropped in pre-season were gone.

“The approach to pre-season is a lot more modern now,” he said.

“There is the normal fitness and gym work but it’s combined with skill work as well now.

“They have to be able to get up and down, make good contact when tackling and their skills need to be second nature when they are under fatigue.”

In a positive sign for the club the Mustangs have strengthened their squad with several key re-signings and new players from outside the region.

“We retained a number of our championship winning U18 players,” he said.

“Those boys have taken that winning mentality into pre-season and we kept a few of our U20s. We have also been fortunate enough to welcome some new players to Toowoomba and they have fit right in.

“There are no distinct groups, they’re all friends and working hard.”

After their break over Christmas and New Year the Mustangs will turn their attention to trial games scheduled for February.
