Plea for road safety
Toowoomba man killed in horror crash
POLICE are investigating whether speed was a major contributing factor in a horror crash which claimed the life of a Toowoomba man yesterday.
The Glenvale man, 33, had been travelling north on the New England Highway when his silver sedan veered off the road and hit a tree at Spring Creek.
The car eventually came to rest on its roof in a paddock between Clifton and Allora about 7.50am.
Paramedics tried to save the man who was trapped in the vehicle.
But he died at the scene. A motorist driving behind the sedan witnessed the tragedy unfold and called emergency services to the scene.
Warwick Patrol Group Acting Inspector Jamie Deacon said the shocked witness was left shaken.
Authorities closed the New England Highway for more than two hours to all traffic as the Forensic Crash Unit from Toowoomba began piecing together how the crash occurred.
Police said the man’s next of kin was advised of the tragedy yesterday.
Warwick Patrol Group Acting Inspector Jamie Deacon said investigations would be ongoing for some time.
Initial indications had suggested the man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, had been travelling north on the highway towards Toowoomba.
Act-Insp Deacon said the fatality was a tragic reminder of the importance of being safe on the roads.
“Tragically, coming into the lead up to Christmas, it’s a timely reminder for everyone to travel safely at this time of the year, and all the time,” he said.
“It is a straight stretch of road.”
