New girls competition in DD region a huge success

For seven weeks St Joseph’s College’s under-16s girls team has been competing in the inaugural Rugby sevens girls competition.

The team of 13, which dropped to 12 after one player broke her collar bone, played two 15-minute games a week at Gold Park.

Coach Deb Newton said it was tremendous fun not just for the players but also for the coaches who volunteered their time each week.

“They girls would turn up about an hour before the game to train with three teachers from St Mary’s (one being a parent of the girls),” Newton said.

“I also learnt something each week so it was great for me as well.”

The St Joseph’s team finished equal fourth on the table with Scots College who they missed out on playing due to a washed out game.

“They tossed a coin and unfortunately we lost the toss and were relegated to fifth place,” Newton said.

They then played Lockyer for fifth position and were defeated.

Not to be disheartened the girls then played for sixth place against Glennie where they finished with a win.

“It was a great little competition and the girls really enjoyed themselves. We hope it continues next year,” Newton said.

It was a great little competition... we hope it continues next year.
