Pigs don’t fly, but butchers do

- Meghan Harris meghan.harris@thechronicle.com.au

THIS little piggy went to Sydney - by car. While its butchers flew from regional Queensland to be interviewed by the Sunrise team on national television.

The Toowoomba butchers responsible for Australia’s best ham were yesterday thrust into the media spotlight 24 hours after Kerry Brisbane from Westridge Meats won the meat accolade.

Judges of Australia’s ham of the year said Mr Brisbane’s product was considered perfect in nearly every category.

Westridge Meats owners Luke and Michelle Jensen were flown to Sydney after the win and appeared on Sunrise.

But the ham, which wasn’t able to be flown, was driven to Sydney instead.

The husband and wife team had a table set up with a delicious spread of ham for the staff at Breaky Central to enjoy.

David Koch and Nat Barr interviewed the duo, asking how it felt to sell the country’s best ham.

“It’s a huge honour because it’s Australia wide, we were competing against all the butchers in Australia,” Mr Jensen said.

When asked what makes the hams so special, Mr Jensen gave Mr Brisbane credit.

Ms Barr also tried to get the butchers to reveal the secret to the perfect ham, but the couple kept mum.

Mrs Jensen said the ham could be served either hot with a glaze or cold, but her favourite way to eat it was served with her mum’s mango chutney.

“It comes down to Christmas practicality. I think if you’ve got time to cook up a big feast for your family by all means glaze it but last year we had it nice and cold served with beautiful mango chutney,” she said.

This year $5 from 5000 hams sold at Westridge Meats will go to Jeans for Genes.
