TOOWOOMBA Regional Council and 30 residents have taken to the Planning and Environment court to appeal a potentially huge expansion to a Southern Downs feedlot.

The development at the Warfields Rd site, which is technically not in the Toowoomba region, is being opposed by TRC due to “Concerns (relating) to access, particularly the use of roads in the vicinity of the proposed development that fall within TRC’s jurisdiction”.

One of the co-respondents in the case confirmed that plans would see the feedlot, owned by Layton and Sharalyn Free, grow to accommodate more than 6000 head of cattle, almost double the 3000 head that currently occupy the land at the site.

“He’s using our land as his buffer zone and we are all within 1km,” co-respondent Sheridan Dean said.

“We will all be affected and we don’t want to breathe that in and listen to his cattle mooing all night.”

Southern Downs Regional Council initially stated 13 reasons justifying their knock back of the development application, prompting the Frees to appeal the decision in the Planning and Environment court.

The case lists 32 co-respondents including the Clifton Landcare Group, Toowoomba and Southern Downs Regional councils.
