School shows off diversity
DARLING Heights State School was presented as a finalist in the prestigious Access Community Services Cultural Diversity Award.
The 2017 Community Achievement Awards Presentation ceremony was held at Royal on the Park, Brisbane last month and presented by Access Community Services CEO Gail Ker.
More than 300 guests gathered from across the state, including Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Anthony Lynham, to celebrate Queensland’s high achievers and community contributors.
Darling Heights State School is a culturally diverse school with 325 students having language backgrounds other than English.
They have employed a community engagement officer to provide programs such as small courses for new Australian parents, friendship, play group and language groups.
The school works with refugee and migrant organisations to enable them to understand each group’s cultural requirements to ensure the success of their projects.
The eight category winners were:
Paws & Relax Pty Ltd of Eagle Farm – Ricoh Australia Customer Service Award
Bugs for Bugs of Mundubbera – Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award
Kaloma Home for the Aged of Goondiwindi – Prime Super Employer Excellence in Aged Care Award
Graduate Women QLD Sunshine Coast Branch – Access Community Services Cultural Diversity Award
Selena Wool of Capalaba – Australia Pacific LNG Community Hero Award
eWaste Connection Ltd of Chapel Hill – Pullenvale Ward Outstanding Achievement Award
Morgan Stebbings, Holland Park – University of Southern Queensland Teaching Excellence Award
Umbrella Network of Rockhampton – Awards Australia Community Group of the Year Award
Lighthouse Care was also announced as the People’s Choice Award winner.
