Liverpool rack up record win at Anfield

-

FOOTBALL: Five-time continental kings Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League knockout phase with a 7-0 hammering of Spartak Moscow while Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo set another scoring record.

A first Reds hat-trick from Philippe Coutinho, a brace from Sadio Mane and singles from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah delivered Liverpool their biggest win at Anfield in 10 years to top Group E.

Liverpool were joined in the last 16 by Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto on the final matchday of the group stage.

Liverpool’s 23 goals in the group stage is a record for an English club, beating Manchester United’s 20 en route to winning the 1998-99 competition.

Manchester United, Basel, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Roma, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester City, Besiktas, Tottenham and Real Madrid had already secured their places in Monday’s round of 16 draw.

Manchester City finished the group stage with a 2-1 loss to Group F rivals Shakhtar after a wonderstrike from Bernard and Ismaily pouncing on ’keeper Ederson’s error.

It was the first competitive defeat of the season for Pep Guardiola’s team with Sergio Aguero netting a late consolation penalty.

Juergen Klopp’s men were never in danger of not joining them after Coutinho sent them on their way from the penalty spot in the fourth minute.

At the Bernabeu, Ronaldo made it nine goals in the competition this season with a fine strike in the 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.

In other games, Tottenham overwhelmed visiting APOEL, Napoli lost 2-1 at Feyenoord and Porto trounced Monaco 5-2 and Turkish outfit Besiktas downed Leipzig 2-1.
