Take a hike in the great outdoors
A GREAT way to get outdoors and enjoy nature is to go on a hike or bush walk.
There’s a wide range of parks and trails in your area. Check out your local council website or the State Government’s National Parks and Forests site for a list of places to visit.
Remember when going on a hike to leave no trace other than your footprints.
Make sure all of your rubbish is collected, taking a large zip-lock plastic bag works well.
Tips on hiking
Keep it easy – select a hike that isn’t too long or strenuous.
Make it feature-friendly – pick a trail that has interesting features, such as a stream or waterfall, or has a goal to reach, such as a lookout.
Make time for exploration – allow time to discover and examine the natural things around you.
Be prepared – pack the essentials such as water, first aid kit, insect repellent, sunscreen, binoculars, magnifying glass and camera.
Dress for success – slap on a hat, wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, take rain clothes, pack a change of clothes and something warm in case it turns chilly.
Take energy stops – take breaks for fluid and food.
Spot it
On your hike see if you can spot: something blue; an animal print; animal poo (scat); a seed pod; some fungus, moss or lichen.
