Condamine River shining as consistent weather arrives

- with Kris George from Fish ‘n’ Bits Bait & Tackle

COOBY DAM

COOBY continues to produce some good yellowbelly around the weed beds.

Trolling Jackalls has been the most popular technique while there has also been a lot of under-size cod taking bait and lures all over the lake.

This is a good sign and with the nice consistent weather around I’ll be expecting a big cod to be landed soon in the late afternoon.

Saltwater yabbies and ZX blades are again popular for fishing the deeper water around the buoy line and in the creek bed.

LESLIE DAM

THE small fish continue to plague most anglers.

Each session anglers are landing good numbers of yellowbelly on both bait and lures although the average size is barely legal, around the 30cm mark with some smaller.

It’s mostly a great place to take the kids.

The fish are spread all over the lake mainly in the deeper water of the old creek bed.

It’s perfect to get the kids into a few fish.

I would recommend using saltwater yabbies or a blade to jig vertically on the bottom.

CONDAMINE RIVER

WITH the cod season now in full swing many anglers are fishing all parts of the Condamine and connecting creeks with most areas best accessible via a kayak.

Some have had success land based.

The Condamine is a great fishery and many baits and

lures work well the most popular being spinnerbaits, surface lures and live shrimp.

With some big cod and a few nice yellowbelly caught this week I’d suggest the Condamine River around Allora as a good place to fish over the coming weeks having less angler pressure than most of the lakes.

SOMERSET DAM

AS MOST know, Somerset is a real midweek fishery.

Somehow the fish know when it’s the weekend and they slow down.

This trend continues with fantastic reports of big bass landed during the week and other reports of shut down schools over the weekend.

Getting the right day is up to a bit of luck but Saturday and Sunday have been quieter.

The fish have been schooling up well at Pelican Point in around 30ft of water.

Casting spoons and plastics have worked best.

BOONDOOMA DAM

TYPICAL summer fishing at Boondooma has begun with

most fish sitting in what is called a thermocline (a comfortable zone of water) which is around 30ft.

Checking out from most points in around 30ft is a great start and locating some schooling fish with your sounder or locate them by trolling deep diving lures.

Once located either bait or sinking vibes will work best.

There have been plenty of good catches lately and the fishing is red hot with a very similar bite occurring at Bjelke-Petersen also.

GOLD COAST

INSHORE has been great fishing with plenty of flathead, whiting and bream

caught fishing over the sand flats on shallow diving lures and even surface.

The canals are starting to produce some nice

mangrove jack and there are more common reports of barramundi being landed in the northern reaches of the broadwater.

Offshore has seen many anglers out trolling for pelagics with some nice wahoo and dolphin fish on offer especially around the FADS and close to the EAC.

Six and eight inch skirts along with 160 laser pros trolled in a spread has worked best while live baits will most likely be the best options.
