Lines out the door for Christmas gift pick-ups

BENITA James couldn’t have looked more relaxed as she wrapped up the last of her Christmas shopping.

The self-confessed online shopping addict picked up her last few parcels from Australia Post’s Margaret St outlet yesterday and was very much on the downhill run with all of her Christmas preparations, including much of the cooking.

She said she loved the service at the Margaret St centre as well as the convenience of shopping from home.

She paid a visit to the same outlet a few weeks ago to send off her Christmas cards to Winton and was looking forward to a trip to northern New South Wales to enjoy the festive fun with her in-laws.

Ms James certainly wasn’t the only one, with lines of people picking up their last-minute parcels stretching out the door at a number of points throughout the day.

It was a familiar sight across the country, with Australia Post recording December 18 as its biggest parcel delivery day of the year. The Christmas run-up started in October and since then parcel volumes have been unprecedented.

Australia Post Group Chief Operating Officer Bob Black said record parcel volumes were being processed through sorting facilities across the country.

Toowoomba has long been at the forefront of online shopping, with the 4350 post code one of the country’s busiest.

“We know Australians love online shopping and we will have our biggest ever parcel delivery day tomorrow, with over 2.5 million parcels expected through our network,” Mr Black said ahead of yesterday’s rush.
