THE owner of a Lockyer Valley tavern was seriously assaulted after disturbing a thief in what police described as a “fierce” attack.

The 64-year-old man is currently in the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he has underwent surgery for serious wounds to his face.

Darling Downs Detective Acting Inspector Paul McCusker said the owner of the Brightview Tavern, who lives across the road, went to investigate after the alarm sounded at his business about 3am yesterday.

“It was at that stage he was set upon by a male person who had broken into the hotel,” Det Act Insp McCusker said.

“He was set on with an iron bar. A very fierce attack.”

The offender had been trying to open an ATM machine at the time he was disturbed, but did not succeed.

Det Act Insp McCusker said the offender then left the scene in a red car that had been stolen from Goodna about 9.30pm on Tuesday.

That car was found about 30 minutes after the offender left the tavern, burnt out at Laidley. About 40 minutes after that another vehicle was stolen, from Stanford Place at Laidley, about 1km from where the red car was discovered.

That car, which has zip ties on the front bumper, is a 2007 silver Suzuki Swift with Queensland registration 659KDS that has yet to be located. Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the red car or the outstanding silver car to contact police.

The public is also asked to be on the lookout for any discarded clothing including a black jacket, long black pants and a heavy pair of gloves.
