Traffic gripes

- — D. GREENTREE, Toowoomba

IT HAS came to my attention, more so in the past few months, going by the drivers on our roads that our road rules must have changed and I didn’t know.

Either that or a majority of them have their own rules called, “it’s all about me”. From mainly middle age down to P platers, male and female.

On a very recent trip driving on the Gatton bypass we were doing 100 km/h when a young girl passed us around 110km/h with a drink can in her left hand and holding a straw in her right, almost running off the road.

Then on a trip to the dump on O’Mara Rd, a white car had to be doing 100km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Among other things, the number of drivers who don’t indicate on roundabout, changing lanes or cornering. Not using lights in bad weather, cutting off on-coming traffic from side streets. Driving and parking on the incorrect side of roads - which is an increasing habit.

Stop signs must have changed to give way. At one location I estimate 100 cars per day do not stop at each of these signs.

Another thing that gets me is those turning left who swing partly into the right lane to do so. Those who push their way in where two lanes run into one. Why? They can’t stand anyone in front of them or have to be first.

What happened to the give way to the right in some of these cases? There are too many two lanes running into one in Toowoomba for the impatient, pushy drivers.

In these cases there should be one left, one straight through and one right turn.

This would stop the abuse from some drivers when they don’t get their way and expect you to back off or push in.
