FIREFIGHTERS have saved a woman’s pets after her Rangeville home was partially destroyed by fire yesterday.

The woman, who was not home when the fire started, arrived to watch on as multiple crews battled a blaze that started in the front of her Perth St home about 2.30pm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Kitchener St station officer Scott Frame said when crews arrived the home was well-involved in fire.

Early investigations suggest the fire started in a carport, which was sheltering a car. The carport was attached to the home.

“Crews quickly went into action and doused the flames at the front of the building and other crews went around the rear, searched for animals and thankfully we rescued all animals and birds out of the home,” Mr Frame said.

Two dogs, two cats and two birds were rescued from the home.

Numerous passers-by made the call to 000 and allowed fire crews, which included four trucks with pumps and a command vehicle, to be on scene quickly.

One of those callers was Will Conan who was riding bikes with friends when he noticed plume of black smoke.

“(I) just saw the big black cloud and thought black smoke is not too good so just called up 000 and got on the fire brigade and they had heaps of calls already,” he said from the scene.

“So we just came over to have a (look) and see what happened.”

Crews had to force their entry from the rear of the building and were able to get the fire under control quickly.

“Internally it’s mainly smoke and heat damage to the internal.

Obviously the front carport area is fairly well burnt out with the car inside,” Mr Frame said.

Mr Frame added the animals were doing well apart from one bird which escaped. Mr Frame said it was hoped the bird would find its way back home.

Investigations into the cause are continuing.
