Build-up to derby winds up

- — Matt Windley

MELBOURNE derby mind games are in full swing after Ross McCormack was sensationally named in Melbourne City’s extended squad for Saturday’s showdown.

Less than a week ago McCormack’s season was thought to be over after he appeared to suffer an ACL injury.

And while that prognosis was later downgraded, he still consulted with specialists on Monday night with the distinct possibility of surgery still on the table.

The chances of the Scottish striker, scorer of seven goals this season, appearing at AAMI Park on Saturday remain remote. But the naming of Warren Joyce’s extended squad will at least keep Kevin Muscat guessing.

If McCormack doesn’t come up it is far from clear who will be City’s striker, as youngster Braedyn Crowley is the club’s only other recognised No. 9 available.

Otherwise, Marcin Budzinski, Nick Fitzgerald or Nathaniel Atkinson are candidates to play a makeshift strike role. The other conundrum Joyce faces is who to play at right back in place of the suspended Manny Muscat.

Osama Malik filled the role when Muscat missed the Central Coast game a fortnight ago.

But Malik is unsure as to whether or not he will be shifted from midfield again.

“There are a few guys in our team who can play there,” Malik said.

“So, at the moment, your guess is as good as mine.

“I’ve not played right back a whole lot. It’s one of those positions that I’ve been asked to play a few times, so it’s somewhere that I feel I can help the team if I’m needed.

“It’s certainly not my first choice, but beggars can’t be choosers.”

Bruce Kamau was a conspicuous absentee on the extended squad list despite earlier in the week declaring himself over a knee injury.
