JUNIORS ON STATE PODIUM
Junior pair to pull on Qld colours
Two Toowoomba cyclists have ended 2017 on a high note after retaining their place on next year’s Queensland junior track team.
Emma Stevens and Declan Trezise will contest the National Junior Track Championship in Melbourne during February after producing strong performances at the 2018 Queensland Masters and Junior Track Cycling Championships.
The duo contributed to a strong showing from Toowoomba riders at last weekend’s titles at Anna Meares Velodrome.
Stevens won gold medals in the under 15 female time trial and sprint while also collecting silver in the Keirin.
Trezise took out the under 17 men’s Madison and capped his strong meeting with silver medals in the points race, individual pursuit, time trial and scratch race.
Their success was part of a large medal haul for Darling Downs Cycling Club members.
Emma’s mother Megan
ensured the titles would be a memorable family affair with her own gold-medal double.
Megan won Masters gold in the team sprint and 500-metre time trial and silver in the sprint.
Megan said the selection of Emma and Trezise for the new-year nationals capped a good championship for Toowoomba riders.
“Our numbers are up a bit
in Toowoomba at present and there was a good spread of medals amongst our representatives,” Megan said.
“Queensland selection for both Emma and Declan is a worthy reward as well for all their hard work.
“Emma is still keen on her BMX as well but she loves doing the track and wants to keep mixing the two sports for as long as she can.”
Matt Locker, Trent West, Rob Walker and Tom Galbraith were also amongst the Masters gold medals.
The quartet combined to win the team pursuit gold medal.
Locker also won silver in the Men’s Masters 2 points race and individual pursuit along with bronze in the scratch race.
Walker won silver medals in the Men’s Masters 4
Keirin and sprint while also collecting bronze in the time trial.
West took out the Men’s Masters 3 individual pursuit silver medal and time trial bronze.
Toowoomba’s Nathan Graves capped his triumphant entry into Masters competition this year with gold medal victories in his time trial and team sprint events.
