Council considers ban over RSPCA probe
LOCKYER Valley Regional Council confirmed it is considering a banning order on activity at the Laidley Horse Sale Yards in light of an investigation into the conditions animals were left in at the weekend.
“Since being made aware of the allegations, the council is looking at available options including putting a temporary suspension on use of the facility for this purpose. The council is aware that the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries is investigating the allegations and looks forward to the outcome of the investigation to assist in determining appropriate action,” a spokesman said.
“The council is also looking at possibly closing the facility during the months of December and January when historically we receive the hottest temperatures, and restricting access to stalls that don’t have access to water.”
The RSPCA and Biosecurity Queensland confirmed on Monday they were investigating claims that horses in poor condition were left with no water or shade for an entire day on Saturday.
Several users took to social media to post images and videos of horses they claim were in distress at the saleyards.
Allegations that are taken seriously by the LVRC.
“The council in no way condones animal cruelty in any way shape or form. It is important to note that responsibility for animal welfare lies with users of the facility,” the spokesman said.
“It’s always disheartening to hear of allegations of this nature.”
