WHEN legislation making same-sex marriage legal passed Kat Cherry was one of the first celebrating in Toowoomba.

An avid supporter of gay rights, Ms Cherry was so thrilled with the announcement she made a big pledge.

The Garden City photographer is offering to shoot the first same-sex wedding in Toowoomba for free.

“Equality is really important,” she said.

“It was one rule for one couple and one for another and we’re not in the 1900s any more.

Equality is really important... We’re not in the 1900s any more. I just love love.

“I just love love.” Despite only declaring her intentions a few weeks ago, Ms Cherry is not surprised she hasn’t yet been inundated with offers.

The electorate of Groom, after all, voted “No” in the 2017 plebiscite.

“When you want to do something (like this) you have to sacrifice the monetary side of things,” Ms Cherry said.

“We live in such a bubble where people don’t want to accept change or anything different.

“We live in a very Christian and religious-based (area). At the same time, I respect everyone’s views but they are not mine.”

Ms Cherry said she did not make much money from photographing weddings, stating it was something done out of “joy and love”.

Her inspiration to make this offer instead came from a troubled past.

“I had a traumatic upbringing,” she said.

“I was brought up in an abusive environment where I didn’t get to experience joy and love.”

Ms Cherry’s offer to photograph the city’s first same-sex marriage for free is still standing.
