BIG COD LANDED AT LESLIE

Keen angler cleans up at Leslie Dam

Keen Toowoomba angler Tony Andrew was warned he wouldn’t have much luck at Leslie Dam but decided to drop a line anyway.

About two weeks ago he landed a 60cm cod within five minutes of being out on the water.

So he decided to head back out at the weekend, this time with his son.

“There were more skiers than anglers and I don’t think anyone else were catching anything,” Andrew said.

After about five hours and seven yellowbelly later they decided to call it a day.

But not without dropping a line one last time before heading home.

He reeled in another prized cod, 50cm this time.

“Everyone tells me you can’t catch them (at Leslie Dam) and I just cleaned up,” Andrew laughed.

“It’s been on fire out there for me.”

However it’s not the spot at all that’s the secret.

Andrew said it was making the change to smaller lures.

“I changed quite a few lures around out there and I caught all the fish on two of my smallest lures, cod and all,” he said.

“You can catch big fish on small lures.

“I was catching no fish with big lures.”

He didn’t see anyone else have much luck on the water either.

“I don’t know what the other people were using but I didn’t see anyone reel in a fish at the weekend or the other week,” Andrew said.

“I catch and release all my fish too to keep them going in the dam system.”

Andrew has been fishing in the region since he was young and his own dad was taking him out for trips.

He said Leslie Dam was a good place to drop a line because the water was quite shallow at the moment.

“Cressbrook Dam is also good but it’s a bit hit and miss sometimes,” he said.

While he’s had some luck in the past fortnight Andrew said fishing wasn’t always about the catch.

“It’s my getaway and relaxing time,” he said.

“I can sit out there and have the time of my life even if I don’t catch a fish.”

He said fishing was now even better with his young family.
