Maxwell cops ODI ‘White-out’

-

AUSTRALIAN selectors have recalled veteran Cameron White to the one-day squad to face England.

White, 34, last played for Australia in 2015 but is second on the Big Bash run-scoring table and will join the team for Sunday’s opener at the MCG.

He played 88 one-day games for Australia and was the national Twenty20 captain before falling out of favour with selectors.

White was chosen instead of Victorian teammate Glenn Maxwell as an injury replacement for Chris Lynn.

White has more than once clashed with selectors, including last summer when he said they were treating the one-day team like a a “development team” when unknown Queenslander Sam Heazlett was called up.

White scored almost 200 at an average of 50 in the JLT One-Day Cup in October having been the tournament’s leading run-scorer last summer with 457 runs, including two centuries and two fifties.

He is the second-highest run-scorer in the BBL and has edged out uncapped Hobart Hurricanes batsman D’Arcy Short (the BBL’s leading run-scorer) and in-form Perth Scorchers all-rounder Ashton Turner.

“He’s in very good form as his figures demonstrate. He’s playing very well,” national selector Trevor Hohns said of White.

“He’s experienced, he’s a very smart cricketer and he’s a good fielder.

“He ticks all the boxes for what we need at this stage.”

Earlier this week White said he was just trying to keep his good BBL form “rolling” and wasn’t worried about a call-up to replace Lynn.

Australia ODI squad: Smith (c), Warner (vc), White, Cummins, Finch, Hazlewood, Head, M Marsh, Paine, J Richardson, Starc, Stoinis, Tye, Zampa.
