Top boxers set for clash

BOXING: Passion will fuel Country’s quest to win the 2018 Brayd Smith City v Country cup.

Eyeing a third straight cup win the City team will be the hunted at TGW & Smithy Brings The Big Fights 19 in March.

Promoter Brendon Smith said cup should not be missed.

“Amateur boxing is where it all starts for these fighters,” he said.

“Some of them (the boxers) dream about being Olympians, others want to turn pro and nights like these are where it all starts.

“And these country fighters are determined to show just how passionate they are.

“There is a real rivalry building here, the country team really don’t want city to win a third straight cup.”

The City versus Country Cup is just one highlight on a massive day-night fight card.

This a number of Australia’s top boxers have been named to fight on a night dedicated to the memory of Toowoomba’s late boxing champion Brayd Smith.

Australia super feather weight champion Brent Rice will face Brendon Saunders at a catchweigh­t of 60kg for the World United Championsh­ip Brayd Smith Belt.

Will Sands will face Jamie Hilt and fresh off his recent Super 8 victory Jack Asis will meet Rivan Cesaire.

Smith said the addition of the elite boxers is a testament to his son Brayd’s legacy.

“He (Brayd) touched the world,” Smith said.

“Everyone loved him – he was a true champion.

“The fact we have these top boxers signing on shows the effect Brayd and proves the respect in which Toowoomba is held also.”
