Summer heat a hit for families

- Tara Miko tara.miko@thechronicle.com.au

TOOWOOMBA sweltered through its hottest day of the year on Saturday as temperatures sizzled across the region.

The mercury rose to a top of 37 degrees in the Garden City on Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology said, and a slight smattering of rain did little to cool temperatures that night.

The heat continued into Sunday with the hottest minimum temperature recorded yesterday morning at 22.9 degrees.

But favourable winds on Sunday kept things cool enough for residents to enjoy a day in the city’s parks.

The Western Downs region bore the brunt of the heat with Miles recording a maximum of 40.5 degrees at 1pm and Dalby reached 39.7 degrees at 2pm Saturday.

Gatton recorded a top of 41.4 degrees at 3pm while Warwick reached 39.7 degrees.

Temperatures dropped across the region yesterday and are expected to fall again today as a cool change sweeps the Western, Darling and Southern Downs regions.

Easterly winds will keep Toowoomba’s forecast maximum temperature below 30 degrees but strong sunny conditions will push the UV index to extreme today, the bureau said.

Warwick will reach a top of 31 degrees while Stanthorpe will be slightly cooler again with a top of 27 degrees.

Dalby will reach daytime temperatures in the low to mid 30 degrees range.
