Diggers and Wests bring home wins

Wests’ winning momentum from Friday’s Twenty20 victory carried over into the HardingMadsen Shield final yesterday.

They enjoyed Saturday off in between their wins while the other A-grade Toowoomba teams battled it out for the first win of the two-day competition.

Northern Brothers Diggers took home the honours after chasing down Highfields Railways’ total of 119 in the 56th over.

Meanwhile it was a stalemate between University and Metropolitan-Easts.

“In the past Met-Easts have chased down some big scores,” University’s Chris Webster said.

“We thought we would try and give them an average of just over four runs an over to chase down.”

University batted another 20 overs on day two of the match reaching 8-264.

“They (Met-Easts) didn’t have much of a go at getting the score although they never really chased it,” Webster said.

“No one wanted to start the season off with a loss.”

So both teams started the two-day competition with a draw after University failed to bowl Met-Easts out and fell four wickets short.

“Met-Easts did a pretty good job at shutting the game out,” Webster said.

“We lost a couple of chances. Maybe if we took them we might have gotten closer.”

University now turn their attention to knocking over this week’s victors Northern Brothers Diggers next week.

“A draw doesn’t hurt but in saying that we need to beat a team ahead of us now to push for finals,” Webster said.

“A win this weekend will set us up to move forward and have a good chance.”
