Hopes for cannery to be funded

THE team behind the Lockyer Valley Cannery has asked for help from the public to fund the multi-million dollar project.

It was first announced in 2013 and would involve building a processing and packing factory at Grantham in the Lockyer Valley.

However the project has yet to secure funding to make it a reality.

The cannery team is now appealing to the public, putting the word out on social media to urge individuals to invest about $10 million towards it.

“Does Facebook really work,” the post said.

“Can we reach 100,000 people who would each consider investing as members of a cooperative $1000 each to fund a cannery (food processing plant) in the Lockyer Valley.”

The post said the cannery would create more than 400 jobs.

It is also hoped to sell about $120 million worth of Australian fruit and vegetables each year for the next 40 years, both in Australia and overseas.

As of yesterday afternoon, less than 24 hours since the team announced the idea, hundreds had already put their hands up to invest and be a part of a project which many said would support Australian farmers.

According to the project’s chief executive Colin Dorber, becoming a part of the cooperative meant that investors would be classed as a member and owner and would be paid dividends.
